SESSIONS AT 73 is a proud pusher of KOMBUCHA TEA

STAY TUNED FOR DETAILS ON AN UPCOMING KOMBUCHA TEA TASTING PARTY!

The Fairy’s Tonic Kombucha is a delicious brewed and fermented tonic from an ancient and honoured recipe, handmade and delicately cultured with purified, organic ingredients for 30 days.
Our potent raw Kombucha Tonic concentrate is packed full of live digestive enzymes, resulting in immediate digestive aid and providing an influx of healthy acids to detoxify the liver, leaving your eyes, skin and hair shining with Fairy glow!

For over 2,000 years Kombucha tea has been revered as a miracle tonic in Russia, China, and Japan earning it’s name as the “Remedy for Immortality” circa 221 BC. Said to have originated in the Himilayas, Kombucha’s popularity has remained strong today due to its powerful ability to boost the immune and digestive systems while eliminating disease causing microbes, harmful yeast and bacterial infections. At the Fairy’s Tonic, we remain true to the ancient formula for producing this miracle tonic, steering clear of pasteurization and synthetics, our Kombucha Tonic comes to you the way it did to our grandparents and their relatives-completely raw and in purified glass containers.

At the Fairy’s Tonic we ferment our uniquely organic tea base with our treasured Kombucha culture for just the right amount of time (fairy time that is!), allowing full benefits of this sensitive process to take place and resulting in our delicious potent brew. Along with enhancing the immune system, improving digestive function, regulating the appetite, decreasing post meal bloating, and supporting overall cellular function, our Kombucha Tonic is 100 % raw-a living enzyme gem- sure to give you a surge of energy!

Full of beneficial nutrients such as ‘live’ active enzymes, amino acids and viable probiotics, our Kombucha Tonic blend results in the effective removal of stored toxins (by way of the water soluable Gluconic Acid, which binds to toxins and cannot be reabsorbed by the body, so must make its way out!) . Our Kombucha Tonic’s healthful bacteria & enzymes nourish and restore the digestive system, while it’s alkalizing PH boost the body’s ability to ward off illness and creates a mental state of clarity and calm.

At the Fairy’s Tonic we believe that glowing health, beauty and radiance are attainable to all, and the first step begins with what the Ancients called the center of physical health- the digestive core! Our Kombucha Tonic is power packed full of digestive aid and we would love for you to sip our tonic daily and experience the vitality that comes with a high functioning core!

MUCHO THANKS TO ZOEY and the FAIRY TONIC TEAM.

SESSIONS at 73 is a proud dealer of Komucha tea. They retail for $7 a bottle. Ask for details...

DONATION

I would like to report that Debbie and Neal Roberts were kind enough to donate their upright Handok piano to the SESSIONS AT 73 project. We couldn't be more thrilled by the support and generosity the Roberts have shown to our local music scene.

SKYLOCO

SKYLOCO TONIGHT

REMO'S STORY: I have recorded and played in the UK and Canada as a solo act and with different bands. My latest project - which I 'm delighted with - is SkyLoco, based in St. Catharines.

My first completely solo CD was born in July 2004; a 12 song CD entitled 'From The Top'. All the songs were written, performed, and recorded by me in London, England.

Then came an EP called 'Broken'. With help from Elena (production/engineering), Midus (bass), and Stuart Anning (drums), 'Broken' is 4 songs taken 'From The Top' but now recorded live with a band.

SkyLoco is hashing it out in the countryside, working towards a new full CD. Some songs have been laid down and a NEW EP called 'More Barn' is now available. We have recently come back out of the woods to perform and will continue to gig.

We invite anyone & everyone to open their minds, see the BIG picture, and make this a better place to live through each of our individual actions. SkyLoco will be spreading the word perpetually, through music and through live performance. I continue to pursue song writing and play live in Canada and in the UK; either with band, or solo.

'EARTHONE' IS NUMBER 3 ON MATCHBOX RADIO 24 PLAYLIST. TO LEND SUPPORT, PLEASE VOTE at www.matchboxradio24.com** **PEACE ** **

THANKS TO PATTI AT SCAAC FOR THIS

SEVEN WAYS TO SUPPORT ARTISTS
As the Saturday Star's recent series has revealed, artists are more highly trained and educated than the population at large, but their incomes lag far – nearly 40 per cent – behind the average living wage.

The series also demonstrated that artists – whether poets, actors, sculptors, dancers or filmmakers – aren't slackers or living the lives of pampered elites.

At least half of them juggle multiple jobs in order to practise their craft, with no promise of a stable income or a secure retirement.

In fact, the decision to pursue a career in the arts in Canada virtually guarantees a lifetime of uncertainty.

Read the article here.

FURTHER VERBIAGE ON THE CONCEPT

THE SESSIONS MANDATE ... to produce live music events that give audiences a snapshop of music action at the community level, not according to the dictates of coolness values. This attitude is struck not just for its anthropological value... there's a lot of great music and important experiences to be discovered when we take our bias of personal likes and dislikes and stand it aside.
.
.
.
.
.
Too often in art enterprises the notion of selecting and booking content according to criterion of perceived quality and trend-setting has led programmers into the bloated terrain of prejudiced networking. Worse, when individuals fancy themselves sentries at the portal of some desired context that only the few and the worthy can transit, popularity-schemes, bullying and tyranny of local institutions naturally follows suit. Monopolies of clique power organize to keep a minor and limited elite in position, while actively pursuing the wank of fancying itself worthy of judging (and finding lacking) artists or ideas that threaten hegemony. This is the dynamic of schoolyard politics and its twelve-year-old worldviews.

The mandate here at Sessions is to offer an alternative to the fear-mongering of popularity schemes. Instead, the programming here is designed to offer a realtime reflection of who's out there taking the initiative to create and perform music, no matter the style or degree of experience. Period. The value of such a stance is twofold.... it gives people who are driven by the muse a chance to develop and hone their craft in front of an audience, a chance to expose their wares to new ears and eyes, and it gives the community a chance to hear what artists are speaking to and choosing as forms of expression.

One of the advantages of being on the other side of the excess of the 90s and 00s is that its no longer enough to get up in front of a crowd to demo how clever and dexterous one's musical skills are. Audiences now want to ask the question, "What does it serve?" With our times awash in pictures of self-involved fashion slaves striking the VIP posture of staring off into the distance; with hack copy writers imagining themselves barometers of cultural content but instead dumbing-down reportage to myspace and press release rebooting as a substitute for actual journalism, its impossible not to feel disenfranchised by the fascist monopoly of cool-kid elites. This project is an attempt to formulate a natural antidote to this kind of narcissism and distraction propaganda.

STEWED ROOTS THIS SATURDAY AFTERNOON ... DON'T MISS 'EM!

After jamming together for years and years and playing in other bands, Neva and Jeff decided to perform as a duo, and Stewed Roots was born. With Neva on accordion and Jeff on vocals and guitar, Stewed Roots is a natural vehicle for fine original material , foot-stompin' old time country, traditional folk music, and anything else that the Muses send along...

Neva Tesolin started classical piano training at the age of 7, and at 16 she began working as a solo pianist and teacher in the Niagara Region. Jamming and playing in bands taught her jazz and blues, and during her classical training at Brock University she earned many music awards. On piano accordion she’s versatile in folk, blues, cajun, country and celtic music. This eclectic range of influences and experiences is at the heart of her classical suites, songs, and instrumentals. Neva currently records and is a side player on piano and accordion, in Niagara and Toronto

Jeff (Jennifer) Hale has been writing and playing music for a long, long time. She joined her first band in high school and has been performing ever since. Lead vocals, harmony vocals, a cappella, rhythm guitar, folk, blues, bluegrass, country, rock, roots, swing... Jeff lives in Toronto and performs there, and in Niagara. Recent Recordings include: Stewed Roots - In the Middle of This (2008) 'Blue Canoe Lullaby' featured on Canoesongs Volume 1 (Portage Productions) (2004); BroadBand (2002); Women in Music- Live at the Black Sea Hall (2000) ....Jeff plays a 1964 00018 Martin Guitar....

VISION

This fluish economy is forcing people into making some adjustments, and not all of them are of a practical or sensible nature. As manufacturing and agribusiness and the rest of our mercantile interests morph to assume their more evolved 21st century forms, we should dispense with the notion of doing the safe, conservative, replicating thing.

St. Catharines is in a picture-perfect position on the asphalt trail linking Buffalo, Hamilton, and Toronto, a could-be-fab destination waiting to discover its own niche the way NOTL once did, recalling that NOTL now attracts a year-round economy based solely on its unrivaled service of wine and theatre pilgrims. And these days when good-times are getting leached out of our working and financial lives, when nihilism in interpersonal relations breeds a host of disorders and social complaints, people need to get their kicks somewhere. Its the eternal factor that keeps all civilization on the brink of fiscal solvency, the way we hunt expression and creative satisfactions, transcendent experience and a sense of being a part of some lucid whole.

Therefore, in the midst of change and chaotic upheaval, never follow the safest route or conventional wisdom. Instead risk everything.

Venture a most important dream because you can.

SPOTLIGHT: RONLEY TEPER (Toronto)

For those who still consider themselves children at heart, love a bit of comedique yet at times serious storytelling alongside truly magical music, then prepare yourself for the Ronley. Ottawa Citizen describes her as having "an almost childlike fascination for experimentation." Americana UK calls her “Eclectic Nu-Freak Folk Perfect for Late Night Listening."

SESSIONS in proposition

PROPOSITION: How music values and performance mojo can serve shamanic, ie. self-healing and neutralizing, practice. This is a core inquiry at Sessions.

SESSIONS in proposition

PROPOSITION: Presenting evidence and schools of thought on the notion that there are mythopoetic energies at work in defined locations and spheres of influence. A series of public discussions that serve to describe how communities, like other biological, ergo natural systems, begin to live out prescribed possibility sets until fate-run-amok abruptly arrives to break things down. The upheaval either destroys in its wake or revitalizes through the reforms it combusts to include. What's left and operant isn't limited by outmoded remains working alongside the new. This would therefore be the era of compromise and bilateral engineering.

SPOTLIGHT: KIM KOREN (Hamilton)

Kim Koren began performing at the tender age of four, sitting on her father's knee and singing while he strummed his banjo. From that moment on, she knew that music would be the driving force in her life. Born and raised in Dundas, Ontario, Kim has a burning desire to see the world, and a passion for meeting people. Her music is described as a blend of country, rock, and blues.

Live performances are Kim’s strength. They are full of energy and enthusiasm, and reveal her need to connect with the audience. Lyrically, her songs speak of love, loss, truth, and the things that make her happy. The demand for Kim's well-written songs and beautiful voice have led to her performing across southern Ontario for the past 10 years. Her new cd, “Sun Went Down”, was released May 16th, 2007, and has received rave reviews and been played on CBC across Canada, including “Sounds Like Canada”.

In June, Kim Koren and her band Punchbuggy Yellow showcased at the Dakota Tavern as part of NXNE 2007, before flying to London, England to begin a three week long promotional tour. Shows were played in London, France, Slovenia and Croatia, and her new cd has since been receiving airplay on the Slovenian radio station Capris. Upon her return, Kim showcased her sophomore cd on the main stage at the Festival of Friends. In August, Kim recorded "Light In The Window" for December Songs, a Design Hope project for Out Of The Cold. The cd is was released Oct. 20th at the Westside Concert Theatre, and features some of the best writers in the Hamilton area.

In Nov. 2007, Kim was nominated for three Hamilton Music Awards ( Female Artist of the Year, Alternative Country Recording of the Year, and Female Vocalist of the Year.)

In addition to performing shows in New York City in Feb.2008, Kim also showcased at Toronto's Hard Rock Cafe in March, as part of Canadian Music Week.

"So why do people go out and buy Carrie Underwood records when they can listen to people like Kim Koren in their own back yard? This Dundas-born country rocker has a voice that could melt butter. She writes with Stevie Nicks’ power, and her band, Punchbuggy Yellow, kicks butt!". Graham Rockingham of The Hamilton Spectator

"Koren’s voice suffuses this country-but-not-so-country blues-rock with a rare soulfulness.
Every track has something going for it, be it a strong lyric, a driving rhythm, a memorable melodic hitch, or plaintive guitars. And Koren sings it all with seasoned charm and conviction. The whole package is a welcome local surprise from a Hamilton singer who deserves much play. Never Said Goodbye, I Love, and Melbourne Jam are highlights". Jeff Mahoney of The Hamilton Spectator

EVENT TYPES

We feature a program of both conventional and progressive works, including dates with very special artists making rogue appearances in support of this project and its aims. These are headlining talents whose work influences whatever it encounters. We're also gonna be programming intellectual content in the form of public lectures, literary content in the form of spoken word open nights. Stay tuned for details.

CONCEPT

This is an old storefront with a bit of water damage, but a nice wide-open floor with high, original steel ceilings and exposed brick quadrants. The natural acoustics are bouncy and travel well. There's a washroom in the rear with surrounds for comfortable waiting or more recessed hanging out. There's a lot of room for standing. Our chair and bench collection is constantly improving. But don't look for lots of tables and chairs, this isn't what the space is about.

The focus is the area at the rear of the main floor where music is made and events happen.

In terms of amenities, we make coffee and tea for ourselves. You're welcome to grab a mug, pour yourself a cup the way you like it. We have a donation jar at the counter. It would be great if you tossed in a buck or two for the house.

We're looking into getting a used refrigerated case that we could stock with mineral water, unsweetened organic coconut water and bottled kombucha tea. The coconut water is the ultimate mineralizer and we're all chronically demineralized. The kombucha tea is what you should be drinking if you really want a beer. (We don't sell beer. Or wine. Or anything with alcohol, sorry.) Kombucha's got a refreshing fizz and its super rich in probiotics. Since we all have miles of overworked and underfunctioning guts, probiotics are key. We'll also carry some bottled plain water. Our preference would be to run a dispenser of good water you could just put in a glass or your own bottle, but that's too ambitious for this project.

There are only a couple of us running this venue so please be kind and pick up after yourself. Put your garbage in bins and if you've really enjoyed the vibe, the music, the programming, the effort, please feel free to leave us a gratuity. We also pass a tip jar around during performances so that you can support all those artists whose work and effort and creative courage you admire.

SKUNK

SKUNK - brings us an awareness of self-respect. When we fully accept who we are and learn to express the essence of ourselves, without ego, we attract those who share our path and repel those who don't. Skunk medicine is the original "Walk your talk." It is about developing a good self-image. In brings increased sensuality spiritually, sexually, psychically.
